Medicare, Concession Cards & PBS Safety Net

What is the PBS and how does it help me?

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) subsidises the cost of many prescription medicines for Australians. If your medicine is listed on the PBS, you’ll pay a reduced price:

  • General patients: up to $31.60 per PBS medicine
  • Concession card holders: $7.70 per PBS medicine

Ask our team if your prescription is covered under the PBS.

What is a concession card and who can use it?

Concession cards entitle holders to reduced costs on PBS medicines. Common cards include:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Card

Bring your card when collecting prescriptions to ensure you receive the correct pricing.

What is the PBS Safety Net?

The PBS Safety Net helps reduce medicine costs once you’ve spent a certain amount on PBS prescriptions in a calendar year:

  • General patients: threshold is $1,694.00
  • Concession card holders: threshold is $277.20

Once you reach the threshold:

  • General patients pay $7.70 per PBS item
  • Concession card holders receive PBS medicines free of charge

We’ll help track your PBS spending and notify you when you’re close to the Safety Net. You can also apply for a Safety Net Card to make future claims easier.

What if I forget my Medicare or Concession Card?

If you forget to present your card when collecting a PBS prescription, you may pay the full price. However, you can request a PBS refund later by providing your card and receipt.

Can I collect PBS medicine for someone else?

Yes, you can collect PBS medicines on behalf of someone else. Just bring their prescription and Medicare or concession card. If you’re unsure, ask our team for guidance.
